When it comes to vocal legends, few names ring out louder than the iconic Patti LaBelle. Known for her powerhouse pipes and electrifying performances spanning decades, Patti will go down as one of the greatest R&B/soul singers of all time.
Though she long ago cemented her status as music royalty, these days Patti spends more time focusing on family. And key among her biggest supporters is son Zuri Kye Edwards – who is slowly stepping into his own spotlight.
From Backup Singer to Pop Star Mom
Before her fame as a solo artist, Patti rose to prominence as lead singer of the popular group Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles in the 1960s/70s. Their hit “Lady Marmalade” eventually introduced Patti to a global audience.
“I went from just singing background to having teenagers chase my car,” Patti remarked of her meteoric rise.
A string of acclaimed albums and three decades of chart dominance followed, with Patti balancing life as a pop culture icon and dedicated mother.
Patti’s Parenting Approach
- Had Zuri Kye Edwards at age 38 as a single working mom
- Focused on instilling discipline and spiritual values from a young age
- Taught him to embrace individual style/talents over chasing fame
- Remained extremely protective given her status
Raised partially on the road by his famous mom, Zuri Kye Edwards sought to pave his own path coming of age.

Now in his mid-thirties, Zuri Kye Edwards has cultivated a number of interests – with a longstanding passion for sports. He played football and ran track during school. But his greatest talent emerged on the basketball court.

Broadening Horizons Abroad
Zuri Kye’s pursuit of professional basketball opportunities brought him to the island nation of Brunei in 2013. He signed with the Brunei Barracudas of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL).
The ABL features teams from across Southeast Asia battling for hardwood supremacy. And the high-flying American import quickly emerged as a difference maker in the league.
“Edwards throws it down with authority!” screamed one broadcaster during a vintage dunk over multiple defenders.
His athleticism and scoring ability around the rim made Zuri Kye a Brunei fan favorite. He’d ultimately spend parts of five seasons in the ABL cementing his status as an impact import player abroad.
Returning Stateside
In 2018, Zuri Kye Edwards decided to step back from professional basketball and return to civilian life stateside.
“My goal was always to play at a high level against great competition. I’m thankful I got to help grow the game in Brunei. But it was time to move on,” he said.
Back on American soil, Zuri Kye finished his long delayed undergraduate degree and weighed new career opportunities – occasionally still hooping recreationally.
